| Abstract: | Neither the bubble level nor the artificial horizon have been studied in detail in modern histories of instruments. The present paper examines the context in which Thévenot devised both instruments, and scrutinises the early stages of the development of the bubble level to suggest that it was not brought as slowly into use as is normally stated. In a final section its early use as an artificial horizon is discussed and related to the context of its invention |
