Titolo:G.B. Amici's telescopes for Brera Observatory / A. Mandrino, G. Tagliaferri, P. Tucci.
Abstract:From a search in archives in Milan and Modena it has been learnt that G. B. Amici, whose fame as instrument maker is known for important improvements he made in optical devices, supplied two telescopes to the Brera observatory, one in the spring and the other in the autumn of 1811. Particularly notable was this second telescope, a reflecting type with an opening of 11 inches and a focal length of 17 (Parisian) feet. Unfortunately, the very dimensions of this telescope, that made it the biggest then in existence in Italy, raised serious problems about placing it in the observatory and equipping it with a suitable metal mounting. In fact in the years following the delivery of the instrument the lack of financing sufficient to meet these needs prevented the full use of the telescope, to the great disappointment of the Brera astronomers who had rated it as being of a quality comparable to the best built in Europe. In 1839 the telescope was overhauled by Amici and shortened to a focal length of 12 feet, but four more years had to elapse before it could be located in a new turret. Still, mount and auxiliary equipment remained unsatisfactory, and Amici's labour was never fully exploited
