Abstract:
Professionalisation of science may be regarded as synonymous with a scientific education for its practitioners and with their employment as scientists. An examination of the careers of a number of fifteenth-sixteenth century men remembered for their contributions to science shows that a university education was far from unusual while employment as a scientist in or out of the university was very common. This suggests that Renaissance science was in a stage suitable for application to practical uses
