Titolo:The cobbler's clockwork / Silvio A. Bedini.
Abstract:The orrery, an apparatus representing the relative positions and motions of the planets of the solar system and the annual and diurnal motions of the earth and moon, became extremely popular during the eighteenth century. Examples produced by the foremost English makers of mathematical instruments ranged from relatively simple devices to greatly elaborated examples of considerable size. In comparison, the orrery made by James Giles of Gravesend is modest and distinguished neither by innovations or elaboration. It is of particular interest, however, as an impressive achievement of a country cobbler who taught himself in mathematics and astronomy, and in the arts of mechanics and clockmaking in order to produce a teaching device for a local school of which he became headmaster
