Abstract:We give a critical review of G. B. Hodierna's studies on Optics and of his conception of the theory of vision, colors and the rainbow. The personality of Hodierna was very rich and interesting. Although not organically tied to the Galileian school, he appreciated its teachings and participated actively in the scientific debates of the XVII century. In all of his works he continuously tried to give an experimental basis to his theories, and described ingenious experiments on which he based his theoretical elaborations. Although in several instances comparable to those of his contemporaries, his conceptions were sometimes outdated. In consequence, his work did not give lasting contributions to Optics, but does however witness the influence of the Jesuits of the Collegio Massimo of Palermo on the cultural life in Sicily and reflects the richness of the local cultural scene
