| Abstract: | The main aim of this paper is the investigation of the introduction and the gradual development of Chemistry in the wider Greek area during the 18th century and the first decades of the 19th. The first step of this examination is the confinement of the references related to this science to Greek books of Physics and the definition of the exact moment when Chemistry was acknowledged as an autonomous science. A more detailed examination is performed on books exclusively dedicated to Chemistry which are compared with relevant European books. Finally some useful conclusions are expressed concerning the penetration of modern chemical thought in the prerevolutionary Greek area |
