Abstract:
An understanding of the techniques used for the transport of timber is of fundamental importance for a comprehension of the history of the forests of Cadore and of the developing timber trade with Venice. The technical organization existing in Cadore has represented, for at least seven centuries, an efficient model which has allowed a continual expansion of this economic sector, at least up to the end of the last century. The author describes some of the main structures present along the river of and streams of Cadore, such as the Stua of Padola and the Cidolo of Perarolo. The method of constructing the rafts of Piave, which were the main means whereby the timber was transported from the Dolomites to Venice, is also described. A nineteenth century manuscript is published as an appendix. This describes the operations ranging from the tree-felling to the placing of the logs in the river, up to their arrival in Cidolo of Perarolo
