Abstract:
The following letters written by Giuseppe Battaglini to Enrico Betti represent an important document which let us understand some phases of kalian mathematical life in the second half of the nineteenth century. Indeed they allow us to point out significant moments of the scientific activity of the Neapolitan mathematician and, at the same time, to understand the central role played by Betti in the "university policy" of his time. In the background, we can discern important realizations, such as the Giornale di Matematiche by Battaglini, the presence of some outstanding figures of Italian mathematics in that period and the appearance of the new generation of Italian mathematicians
