| Abstract: | The earliest written account of the so-called "distance point method" of perspective construction is found in Viator's De artificiali perspectiva (Toul, 1505). Some interest therefore attaches to the fact that a diagram like that used in the "distance point" construction is to be found in Piero della Francesca's De prospectiva pingendi (possibly written in the 1460s). However, although the diagram occurs in all known copies of Piero's treatise, the accompanying text (which tells one how to draw the diagram) is missing in all the Latin manuscripts of Piero's work. It seems likely that when the translation was made Piero decided that the passage needed either expansion or omission and, in the event, opted for the latter |
