Abstract:
Historians of science, besides devoting much attention to theoretical developments in natural history, are becoming more and more interested in the transmission of natural knowledge by means of correspondence, periodicals, and academies. With regard to the practical side of scientific inquiry, however, little is known about the ways of surveying and making field observations according to different research traditions. This paper intends to explore the field work of traveller-naturalists through the case-study of a prominent Italian scientist of the eighteenth century, the abbé Alberto Fortis (1741-1803). By analysing his published works and manuscripts, Fortis's scientific style and its development over time will be described in detail
