| Abstract: | The extraordinary feature of Settala's collection, in comparison with other Italian collections of the XVII century, is its encyclopedic character. It contains an ample and diverse range of objects which exemplify reality in all its various forms and manifestations. Outlining Settala's life and works, the author points out that this Milanese scholar was acquainted with the work of other Italians and foreigners, such as Magliabechi, Redi, Kircher, and Oldenburg. The A. also reviews Settala's scientific experience, both theoretical and experimental, and his achievement of constructing and collecting a vast and interesting array of scientific instruments |
