Abstract:Recent research in the Italian archives has added considerably to our knowledge of the life of Paolo dell'Abbaco (Paolo Dagomari) one of the major Florentine mathematicians of the fourteenth century. Based on a careful re-examination of all the available source material, this article corrects a number of errors that have crept into the literature regarding this man and summarizes what is known about his life and his place in Florentine society. It now appears that he was only one of a number of Florentine mathematicians who were engaged in teaching elementary mathematics to the children of Florentine merchants and shopkeepers during the period of the Renaissance
