Abstract:
By tradition the large astrolabe of the Museum of the History of Science of Florence has been attributed to Egnatio Danti, but there has never been any secure documentation for that supposition. Here the instrument is described in detail and then dated on the basis of the stellar positions of the rete. It turns out that these were calculated according to the position of the equinox for 1563, when Danti was already in Florence. Both explicit references to the instrument in question in Danti's own Trattato dell'Astrolabio and structural similitarities between it and one built by his paternal grandfather, Vincenzo de' Rinateli, argue that it was the work of Egnatio.
