| Abstract: | The discovery of a series of archival documents dating back to the 17th century testifies to the presence between the end of the 1500's and the beginning of the 1600's in the new Pisan garden of simples of a rich and select collection including numerous "naturalia" and "artificialia", known to many Italian and European scientists who mention it in their writings. A considerable unpublished corpus representing botanical, zoological, and naturalist topics in addition has made possible the start of a study of scientific illustration as carried out in the old Pisan university, where the prefects of the garden, like Aldrovandi at Bologna paid salaries to Italian and foreign artists, among whom were Filippo Paladini and Daniel Froeschl, in order to have illustrated the subjects of their studies and the results of their researches |
