| Abstract: | Torricelli's life before he went to live with Galileo in October 1641, is not well known. Some details are given by two unpublished letters of June-July 1640, one from the Jesuit R. Prodanelli to Torricelli and the other that is Torricelli's answer, both of which are published here. Besides these two letters in the Latin Codex Vaticanus 6921 of the Vatican Apostolic Library others follow, written by physicians and mathematicians of the Society of Jesus to the brother Niccolo Zucchi, extracted from that part of his correspondence which is preserved in the Central National Library of Rome. All these letters show that there were contacts of some significance between the Galilean tradition and Jesuit Scientists right after 1640 |
