| Abstract: | It is often asserted that the invention of the barometer, long attributed to Evangelista Torricelli, was anticipated by Gaspare Berti, with a previously built device. Berti, as reported, built several devices: a siphon which indeed preceded the barometer but did not suggest it; and a later unit which, according to the most creditable sources, was barometric but followed Torricelli's invention. It seems probable that Berti contributed elements to Torricelli's thinking, but not that he anticipated the barometer |
