Titolo:The diagram spera celestis in the Hortus deliciarum : a confused amalgam from the astronomies of Pliny and Martianus Capella / Bruce Stansfield Eastwood.
Abstract:Among twelfth century illustrations of planetary order, the design spera celestis in the Hortus deliciarum has a peculiar derivation. It uses an ordering of the zodiac found in one of the post-Carolingian traditions for planetary apsides as given in Pliny's Natural History. Within this reordered zodiac is found a sequence of planetary orbits which represents one of the two extremes given by Martianus Capella, Earth-Moon-Venus-Mercury-Sun etc., resulting from heliocentric Mercury and Venus. This "half-Capellan" planetary order seems to derive from one-half of a diagram like that in a twelfth-century Avranches ms. This selective combination of the two different types of diagram shows a failure to understand either pattern and a degeneration in planetary designs resulting when the diagrams travel apart from their proper texts
