Abstract:
Thus far has been little investigation of the documents pertaining to the astronomical knowledge and research practices of the "mathematicians" of the Society of Jesus in the period before the introduction of the telescope and the resulting Galileo affair. Here it is published for the first time the text of a lecture on the "supernova" of 1604 which was given at the Collegio Romano in December of the same year. The text does not lack some surprises as will be shown in the following discussion. It is proposed that its author was Odon van Maelcote, the student of Clavius to whom we also owe the Nuntius Sidereus Collegii Romani
