| Abstract: | The author describes an instrument based on stereographic projection which could be used both for time-measurement and for solving problems concerning the position of the sun. When the "horizontal instrument" was first published in England, it became the subject of a violent priority dispute. The dispute is described, and the history of the instrument in seventeenth century England is recounted. The paper concludes with a checklist of surviving examples |
