Titolo:Mechanical and hydraulic models for illustrating electromagnetic phenomena / Paolo Brenni.
Abstract:In the 1860s and 70s, J.C. Maxwell proposed an ingenious synthesis of electromagnetic phenomena which, however, availed of complex mathematical formalisms. In the attempt to better understand the essence of these phenomena, the last decades of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth century witnessed the invention of numerous mechanical and hydraulic models. Some of these were theoretical models and remained on paper, while others were actually built and used as veritable research instruments and didactic aids to illustrate clearly and intuitively, the laws and phenomena concerning electricity. The use of these models, particularly diffused in Great Britain, was violently criticised by French physicist and philosophers Pierre Duhem. Towards the beginning of the XX century, an increased comprehension of Maxwellian electromagnetism, the mechanical vision of which was by then declining, made these instruments superfluous. This article traces the story, particularly focusing on the models that were effectively built
