Abstract:Duhem and Tannery, readers of Galileo - After a long period during which nobody doubted that Galileo founded modern science by imposing both the experimental method and the systematic use of measure, new approaches by Pierre Duhem and Paul Tannery in the early twentieth century radically modified this traditional judgement. In its first pages this essay will clarify how Duhem's interpretation is closely connected to his reappraisal of the limits of the experimental method - a reappraisal which was itself dictated by the evolution of physics; the most important aspects and arguments of this interpretation will then be set out, with a special emphasis upon the presumed dependence of the Galilean dynamics on various fourteenth-century doctrines, such as the theory of the configurationes qualitatum or the theory of the impetus. No less critical than Duhem regarding the part played in the birth of modern science by the experimental method, Tannery in no way inclined towards minimizing Galileo's contribution. The novelty of his interpretation lies in the link he establishes between the discovery and formulation of the principles of the new mechanics on the one hand, and the Galilean cosmological preoccupations, viz. the defence of Copernicanism, on the other hand. For the first time mechanics and cosmology were thus intimately associated in an endeavour to unravel in a non-simplified way the origins of modern science. Though highly different and, as a matter of fact, irreconcilable, Duhem's and Tannery's interpretation can be considered as the real points of departure of two research traditions on Galileo - two traditions still quite alive today.
