Abstract:
In the second half of the XIX century, one attends the emergence of a techno-science of the oceanic environment. We will consider one of the aspects of this emergence, by studying the program of wind cartography organized within the Dépot des cartes et plans of the French Navy. We will analyze the practices, discourses, and epistemological standards at work in this context.We will consider particularly the action of naval officer Leon Brault (1839-1885). The new oceanographical and meteorological approaches of the second half of the century will seem to us strongly marked by the material and intellectual culture of industrial modernity
