Titolo:La conquista del visibile : rimeditando Panofsky, rileggendo Galilei / Lucia Tomasi Tongiorgi.
Abstract:After focusing on the genesis of Galileo as a Critic of the Arts, an essay written by Erwin Panofsky during his stay at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the paper considers the problem of the relationship between Galileo and the visual arts, both regarding his aesthetic attitudes and his personal relations with contemporary artists. Some passages from Galileo's works make it possible to highlight his firm convictions about drawing as a fundamental instrument in support of his own astronomical discoveries. While the concrete experiments performed by Galileo himself and by his friend and painter Cigoli, enthusiastically supported by Federico Cesi, Prince of the Lyncean Academy, reach their peak in the elaboration of the tables accompanying the Istoria e dimostrazioni matematiche intorno alle macchie solari, the difficulty in depicting celestial phenomena will later deter him from pursuing them, though his interest in the role played by pictures in support of scientific research will never fail.
