| Abstract: | Galileo's famous Considerazioni al Tasso is examined from the viewpoint of the images he uses, in particular those of a spatial nature and those tied to visual perception. It is shown how the rhetorical paradigm proves in action, whereby the text is compared to a building and how, at the same time, this topos is ingeniously reinterpreted in the light of modern collecting. In the context of this spatialized perception of the text stands the comparison between a distorted and contrived use of allegory and anamorphic representation, reread in the hermeneutical key of the 'placement' of the reader/viewer with respect to the work, in relation to the very structure of the text. We then reconstruct Tasso's tormented reflection on the allegory of Gerusalemme liberata and analyse the frontispiece of the Cannocchiale aristotelico by Tesauro, in which the exaltation of the correspondence between anamorphosis and metaphor comes to correspond, in an inverted sense, to Galileo's positions. |
