| Abstract: | Popular ignorance of basic mechanics in the Early Modern period led to many of its manifestations being considered as the result of magical practise. In the theatre spectacular effects were obtained from simple technology, and magicians were frequently depicted on stage. The spread of scenic effects from court theatre to the popular theatre led to a familiarisation with the effects of mathematical magic and so helped reduce distrust and antagonism towards the products of new technology |
