Titolo:Scienza e tecnica : i testi della meccanica classica nell'opera di Galileo / Gianni Micheli.
Abstract:In my paper I intend to discuss the role played by the ancient writings on mechanics in the development of Galileo's ideas on technology. Galileo knew very well the pseudo-Aristotelian Mechanical Questions, Archimedes' On the Equilibrium of Planes, Hero's treatise on Pneumatics and Pappus' Mathematical Collections. The relevance of technology in Galileo's works has to be seen in relation to the growing development of economy in the society of XVI-century Europe. Galileo, as Bacon and Descartes, considers technology as a fundamental element of their disciplines, but the relationship between technology and science is however unilateral. Galileo sees the mechanical arts as a great collection of interesting problems: this attitude was strengthened by his knowledge of the Mechanical Questions and his great skill in the handling of materials and the construction of instruments, such as the telescope and the clock.
