Abstract:The considerations on th dynamical status of the rotational motion of a heavy marble sphere wich Galileo presented in his De motu antiquiora, are commonly understood to be repercussions of his early engagement with Copernicanism. In contrast, it is argued here that these considerations were more likely rooted in the context of contemporary machine technology. Specifically the pratical knowledge gathered since the late Middle Ages in the application of flywheels as separate machine components began to attarctsizeable theoretical interest. In their attempts to devise theoretical explanations of the phenomenon of flywheel motion, some early modern scientists in fact devised arguments comparable to Galileo's considerations on rotation in the De motu antiquiora.
