| Abstract: | This essay presents an examination of, first of all, the printing timetable of Galileo's Sidereus Nuncius, secondly the largely astronomical dating of the socalledFlorentine sheets of lunar diagrams preservedwith theGalileo papers in the National Central Library in Florence, and finally, the conclusions expressed by Horst Bredekamp (in his Galilei der Kunstler) regarding theso-called M-L copy of Galileo's book. That remarkable copy contains in the place of printed lunar images a series of five watercolor drawings, which Professor Bredekamp attributes to Galileo himself. This essay contains an extensive critique of that astonishing but dubious claim. |
