| Abstract: | New consideration is given to the general membership of Cesi's Lyncean Academy, in which Giambattista della Porta played a major role as Galileo did. Both della Porta and Galileo developed a program for mechanics: della Porta under Heros' aegis, Galileo by recovering Archimedean tradition. "The scope of mechanics in the sixteenth century and early seventeenth centuries also reflects larger tendencies within the Scientific Revolution" (Laird). In the late sixteenth century "the beliefs and practices of magic were still very much alive" (Keller), as the popularity of Heros' Pneumatikà testifies. This paper considers della Porta's dependence on Hero vs. Galileo's genuine Archimedism. |
