| Abstract: | Unlike other European countries, Italy built its national consciousness around literature, science and the arts. The Renaissance, when Italy could boast the cultural leadership of all Europe, was followed by the decadence of the Baroque period when, for the Arcadia movement, the Enlightenment and the Risorgimento, literature was synonymous with bad taste and aesthetic deterioration. To keep the national prestige high, the Italian intellectuals turned to Galileo and his school, who were considered the precursors of Newton and of European science of the XVIII century. The literary histories by Giacinto Gimma and Girolamo Tiraboschi, and the biographies by Paolo Frisi, Juan Andrés, Luigi Brenna, and Andrea Rubbi made Galileo the hero of Italian redemption, reacting to the scarce importance attributed to him by the Encyclopédie of D'Alembert and Diderot. For all of them, as well as for Francesco Algarotti and Carlo Denina, without Galileo there would have been no Descartes, Bacon, Kepler, Huygens, or Newton. Moreover, Galileo's glory appears even greater when one considers the persecution he suffered to affirm his revolutionary discoveries, as underlined, especially, by the Jacobin thinkers. This perspective would continue, without a solution of continuity, in the XIX century with Vincenzo Monti, Terenzio Mamiani, Luigi Settembrini, Francesco De Sanctis. The myth of Galileo apostle of the superiority of Italy, however, was also shared by the Jesuits, and in the XIX century by Vincenzo Gioberti, supporter of the ''Italians' moral and civil primacy'' |
