Titolo:Owen Gingerich's curious case / William R. Shea.
Abstract:This paper examines an article by Owen Gingerich, published in Galilaeana in 2009, in which it is claimed that the watercolor drawings of the Moon recently discovered in a hitherto unknown copy of the Sidereus Nuncius are a forgery. The case for the authenticity of the drawings had been made in great detail and with impeccable scholarship by Horst Bredekamp in his book Galilei der Künstler that came out in 2007. Bredekamp, as thispapers shows, had anticipated the objections raised by Gingerich and his convincing replies are outlined. Galileo' great gifts as a draughtsman are discussed in what is a prime example of the close relationship between art and science at the time of the Scientific Revolution of the seventeenth century
